MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Grace College's attack could not seem to get on track in a 56-45 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University's women's basketball team Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (13-9; 5-5 MCC) were held to just 30 percent shooting from the field, including just 9 of 32 in the second half (28.1 percent).
In a low-scoring game, Mount Vernon’s 13-2 run over a five-minute stretch late in the contest put the game effectively out of reach.
In the first half, Hannah Lengel’s bucket with 4:53 remaining gave Grace its largest lead of the game at 20-17. Unfortunately for the Lady Lancers, they would not put another point on the scoreboard the rest of the half.
The lead for the Lady Cougars (11-9; 3-7 MCC) did not rise above nine for most of the second half until Grace’s next dry spell offensively.
Grace seemed to threaten when back-to-back scores from Allison Kauffman and Emily Bidwell cut Mount Vernon’s lead to five points with 7:46 to play.
But the Lady Lancers could only afford one basket by Danielle Boykin over the next five and a half minutes to allow the Lady Cougars to blow the game open at 54-36.
Boykin was the lone Lady Lancer in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Hayley Cashier finished with nine points, and Kiera Gray had seven points on 17 shots.
Grace was outrebounded by 16 in the loss, mostly due to their poor shooting performance. The Lady Lancers managed to make just 17 field goals and were 3 of 20 from beyond the arc.
The Lady Lancers face a stiff task on Wednesday when they welcome NAIA Division II No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan to the Orthopaedic Capital Center at 7 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
