WINONA LAKE – Still a year away from being an IHSAA-sanctioned program, the Lakeland Christian Academy girls basketball team is having some growing pains, but things may be getting better.
Following back-to-back 20-point losses to Northfield and Culver, the LCA Lady Cougars (0-3) opened their home schedule Tuesday, falling 47-39 to the Churubusco Lady Eagles (1-2).
Though it ended as an eight-point loss, the early stages of the game made it appear the Lady Cougars would get blown off the court, falling behind 24-5 late in the first quarter.
However, after that 24-point opening quarter, Churubusco went on to score just 23 points the rest of the way.
"In all three games we've played, we've had nerve problems at the start of the game," LCA coach Jay Lavender said.
Along with the nerve problems, LCA also had some foul problems, as the team's leading-scorer this year, senior Jo Boren, picked up her fourth foul with 1:43 remaining in the quarter.
Instead of giving Boren some time off, Lavender stuck with her and she went on to score 11 points, post nine rebounds and record three steals before fouling out at the 4:11 mark of the fourth quarter.
"We stayed in the 2-3 (zone) and had her just front anyone that came into the paint, instead of letting them get the ball then trying to block it," Lavender said about his strategy to keep the 5-foot-11 Boren in the game. "The plan was to just deny and let everyone else try to help out. It worked for 21 minutes."
Along with Boren's production, junior Jessica Goss scored nine points and had three steals, while junior Emilee Catron had nine points and four rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Remington also had a big night, posting a game-high 15 rebounds.
With 11 healthy players on the roster, for the junior varsity and varsity games, Lavender knows he's playing behind the 8-ball, managing quarters, as well as fouls against some of the larger schools on the schedule.
"We've been playing schools, three, four, five times our size, but that's the way it's going to be all the time," Lavender said. "I tell the girls, We have to play up hill. You saw that in the third and fourth quarter – there's no quit in them."
Following the first quarter, LCA actually outscored Churubusco 32-23, and while the game is four quarters long, Lavender wasn't completely downtrodden with the outcome.
"This is the most encouraged I've been so far," he said.
LCA is back in action Monday, hosting Bethany Christian at 6 p.m.
