NAPPANEE - L. Max Newcomer, 82, of 8356 W. Hepton Road, Nappanee, died at 11:35 a.m. Sept. 11, 2010, in The Maples, Goshen, after an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 9, 1928, in New Paris, to Maurice and Ellen Krull Newcomer. On Dec. 30, 1950, in Syracuse, he married Patricia Replogle, who died Feb. 17, 1996. On Aug. 5, 2000, in Nappanee, he married Bonnie Reaker, who survives.

A lifetime area resident, he was a 1946 New Paris High School graduate and was a member of Mt. Tabor Church of God. He had been a Union Township 4-H leader and a former Union Township assessor. He was a farmer and a longtime worker in the kitchen cabinet industry in Nappanee, having worked at Mutschler Brothers and Nappanee Wood Products, retiring in 1991.

Also surviving are a daughter, Sue (and spouse Doug) Purdue, Goshen; four sons: Ryan (and spouse Valerie) Newcomer, Bristol; Wayne (and spouse Jackie) Newcomer, Lafayette; Tracy (and spouse Delores) Newcomer, Nappanee; and Dale (and spouse Phyllis) Newcomer, New Paris; a stepdaughter, Sheri (and spouse Tom) Bradway, Nappanee; a stepson, Steve (and spouse Kim) Reaker, Nappanee; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Carl Eugene Newcomer, Nappanee; and two sisters, Joanne (and spouse Richard) White, LaGrange, and Carol (and spouse Jeffery) Hope, Elkhart. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Tabor Church of God with the Revs. Stan Owen and Janet McFall-Brown officiating. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.
