He was born June 9, 1921, in Wabash County, to Addison and Sophia P. Brane Shaffer. On June 25, 1944, he married Esther E. Blickenstaff, who died July 6, 2005.
He was a farmer and member of the Indiana State Hand Corn Huskers Association. He graduated from Chester High School in 1939 and was active with the alumni association. He was a member of Eel River Community Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake.
Surviving are two sons, Joe (and spouse Donna) Shaffer, Fort Wayne, and John R. Shaffer, Blue Springs, Mo.; three daughters: Betty (and spouse John) Hill, Walling, Tenn.; Susan (and spouse Jim) Orr, Janesville, Wis.; Judy (and spouse Sam) Lambert, Urbana; eight grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and 19 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eel River Community Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake, with Pastor Andrew Simpson officiating. Burial will be at Ulrey Memorial Cemetery, Silver Lake.
Calling is from 3 to 7 p.m. today at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester.
