On Jan. 20, Kyle Tom made his first solo flight at the Warsaw Municipal Airport. With his wife, Angie, and father, Kip, looking on, Certified Flight Instructor Jon Fussle signed Kyle off to spend his first moments as pilot-in-command of the Cessna 152. The successful solo flight lasted approximately 30 minutes while Kyle took to the sky for three take-offs and landings.

Kyle started taking flying lessons at the Warsaw Flying Club Jan. 3, fulfilling a childhood dream. Since then, he has logged a mere 6.6 hours of flight time before being given the go-ahead from his instructor for his solo flight. That, said Jon Fussle, is a particularly short period of time.

"Kyle Tom's situation is not a typical situation for most people who are learning to fly. He came into flying with great eye-hand coordination and a good background in aviation, and that isn't what the average person walks through the door with," Fussle said.

Up to this point, most of Kyle's training has been local in nature, spending most of his training time over the northern half of Kosciusko County and returning to Warsaw Municipal Airport. Next, he and his instructor will begin to travel to cities throughout the Midwest.

Finally, his training will culminate in preparation for the Federal Aviation Administration's examination of his skills, abilities and knowledge. When his training is complete, Kyle will have logged a minimum of 40 flight-hours, will have completed an airman medical exam, a written exam, a practical exam and an oral exam, all administered or designated by the FAA.

"I know it sounds like a lot, but when you take it step-by-step, it comes to the equivalence of a college course," said Fussle.

Fussle is the founder and president of the Warsaw Flying Club. He is a former Captain for a US Airways Express airline and has been flying for more than 14 years and has nearly 10,000 hours of flight time. In 2004, he formed the Warsaw Flying Club by selling his 1989 Cadillac Allante and buying a Cessna 152. Over the past five years, the Warsaw Flying Club has been the catalyst that has given wings to more than 75 citizens of Kosciusko, Whitley and Marshall counties.
