KREMC Announces 2011-12 Scholarship Winners

Kosciusko REMC President and CEO Steve Rhodes recently announced the winners of the 2011-2012 KREMC Scholarship Program.
Nearly 50 students applied for the six $1,000 scholarships awarded.
“This year brought us another outstanding group of applicants for our scholarship program,” said Rhodes. “We continue to be amazed at the great accomplishments and focus these young adults have. Our county is blessed to have such a strong group of students to represent us, and we know these scholarships are a good investment in our area’s future leaders.”
All applicants were required to submit an application detailing their high school or college grades, financial need, community involvement and to write an essay. Applications were scored by judges from Grace College, and 13 candidates were selected from all entrants to be interviewed by area educators. The field was then narrowed to the six winning students.
This year’s KREMC Scholarship winners are:[[In-content Ad]]Whitko High School senior Stephanie Camden is the daughter of John and Vicki Camden, Pierceton. Stephanie has been active in 4-H for 10 years; serves as treasurer and student advisor for her school’s FFA organization; and has been active in volleyball, basketball and softball, along with being an active community volunteer. She also works for an area veterinary clinic.
She plans to attend Purdue University in the fall to train as a veterinary technician.
Nicholas Frecker is the son of Steven and Susan Frecker, Leesburg. Nicholas is a senior at Wawasee High School, where he has been involved in the drama program, playing in numerous roles; the National Honor Society; chorus; and vocal jazz. He is an active community volunteer at the Heartline Pregnancy Center, and at his church. He works as a farm hand.
Nicholas plans to attend the University of Notre Dame to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering.
The daughter of Teresa and Gregorio Gonsalez, Claypool, Diana Gonsalez is a senior at Tippecanoe Valley High School. She has been active in student government, serving as secretary; is a member of the swim team; National Honor Society; KEYS; is a peer facilitator, and serves as a Hispanic youth mentor.
Diana plans to study nursing at Indiana Wesleyan or Saint Xavier University.
Brittany Hartwiger plans to study entrepreneurship and marketing at Indiana Wesleyan University or Grace College.
She is the daughter of Robert and Aimee Hartwiger, Warsaw, and will soon graduate from Lakeland Christian Academy, where she serves as student body president. She has been active in volleyball, drama, music, newspaper, and is very involved in the community, participating in the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy, and volunteering for numerous community organizations.
Scholarship recipient Mattia Rostochak is the salutatorian at Wawasee High School.
She plans to attend Purdue University to student chemical engineering, and she is the daughter of Jeff and Molly Rostochak, Leesburg.
During her high school career, Mattia has played varsity softball, serving as team captain; basketball and volleyball. She is a member of the school orchestra, and also a member of an advanced dance group. She was Miss Kosciusko Outstanding Teen for 2010-2011, and she is a member of her church youth group. She is also an active community volunteer, assisting with activities such as Relay for Life and the Children’s Miracle Network.
The final KREMC scholarship recipient, a Warsaw Community High School senior, is Tiffany Tat. She is the daughter of Tammy Burnau, Winona Lake.
Tiffany plans to attend DePaul University to study chemistry and Spanish.
She is active in National Honor Society, serving as secretary/treasurer; Octagon Club; Tiger Student Athletic Board; Academic All-State member; and she has been a member of the women’s basketball, track and cross country teams. Tiffany is also an active community volunteer, assisting with Toys for Tots and Baker’s Youth Club.
KREMC Scholarships are open to all members in good standing – and their dependents – who are pursuing higher education (including technical programs, master’s and doctorate degrees) at an accredited two-year or four-year university.
Applications for the 2012 scholarships will be available at the KREMC office or on the KREMC website in January.
KREMC is a member-owned Touchstone Energy® electric cooperative serving more than 17,000 members throughout Kosciusko County and into surrounding counties.
