U.S. 30 Crash Hurts 2

BY RUTH ANNE LIPKA, Times-Union Staff Writer

ATWOOD - Two people were seriously injured Monday morning when the driver of a pickup pulled into the path of a sport utility vehicle on U.S. 30, near Atwood.

Police said Gary Knoll, 44, of Warsaw, was southbound on CR 700W about 10:50 a.m. when he apparently failed to yield the right of way to the eastbound SUV driven by Mary Nelson, 30, of Warsaw. Nelson was unable to avoid the collision, which caused Knoll's pickup to roll onto its side. The pickup bed and topper broke loose from the vehicle as a result of the crash.

Knoll and a passenger in his pickup, Michelle Curtis, 36, of Warsaw, suffered unspecified injuries and were airlifted from the scene to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where Knoll was listed in fair condition and Curtis in critical condition late this morning.

Nelson and a passenger in her vehicle, Noah Nelson, 10, of Warsaw, suffered minor injuries, according to police, and were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, for treatment.

Assisting the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department at the scene were personnel from Atwood and Etna Green fire departments, Multi-Township and Plain Township emergency medical services and Indiana Department of Transportation.

The accident remains under investigation.

Two men injured in weekend incidents remain in critical condition at Parkview. Richard Grimm, 38, of Mentone, suffered multiple injuries in a Saturday explosion at Valley Foods, and Brett Estep, 21, of Warsaw, was injured in a Sunday morning motorcycle accident.

Triton Cuts This Year To Save For Next

BY MATTHEW WEIGELT, Times-Union Staff Writer

BOURBON - Triton School Board Monday approved deleting $239,000 in unobliged balances in the 2002 budget.

Cutbacks were $25,000 in elementary teachers' salaries and $100,000 in junior/senior high school teachers' salaries. The Joint Service & Supply, junior/senior high school electricity costs and gas budget also received cuts.

This year's budget received the cuts to preserve the 2003 budget, said Triton Superintendent Ted Chittum.

The corporation can "hold their breath" for November and December, he said. He didn't want to take money away from the corporation in the 18-month budget cycle.

Next year's budget has a "precarious" financial picture due to the state's reassessment, Chittum said.

In another matter, the school board released a study of Triton's 2002 graduating class.

Of the 69 graduates, 43.5 percent headed off to four-year colleges, 30.5 percent are employed and 20 percent went to two-year colleges.

Five Triton graduates entered Indiana University and five entered Ball State. Nine students went to Ivy Tech State College, according to the report.

Also, Eileen Mariani, Triton's planetarium director, submitted a report about usage during the first nine weeks of school.

The planetarium was used 161 hours.

The majority of usage - 63 hours - was between Triton schools' science classes.

Triton School Board members are: president Kevin Boyer, vice president Steve Feldman, secretary/treasurer Larry Lemler, Dave Shively and Steve Blackford. Corporation treasurer is Janet Barker. Superintendent is Ted Chittum. [[In-content Ad]]
