Fifteen fatal traffic accidents in Kosciusko County during 2002 claimed the lives of 17 people.

According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department 2002 Annual Report, five of those accidents, or 29 percent, were alcohol related.

Overall, alcohol-related accidents measured 4 percent, with 48 of 1,309 accidents investigated by the KCSD (including fatalities) deemed to involve alcohol.

In an attempt to combat the number of alcohol-related accidents, Kosciusko County sheriff's deputies made 159 drunken driving arrests. A total of 576 such arrests were recorded among the law enforcement agencies serving the county, including Indiana State Police and Department of Natural Resources.

Thirty-four of all drunken driving arrests by KCSD personnel were made by Deputy Tim Carpenter, with the second highest number - half as many - by Deputy Shawn Castillo. These officers, as well as many of the other officers credited with drunken driving arrests, work third shift (11 p.m. to 6 a.m.) when most drinking and driving incidents take place.

Warsaw Police Department officers made 134 drunken driving arrests; ISP, 88; Syracuse Police Department, 71; Winona Lake Police Department, 57; and North Webster Police Department, 34.

Fifty-four of the 1,309 accidents occurred at 12 intersections in Kosciusko County.

Coined the "Dirty Dozen," the intersections where accidents most frequently occur are: U.S. 30 and CR 800W (seven); Packerton Road and CR 400S, CRs 150W and 400N, CRs 100E and 350N and Old Road 30 and Ind. 13 (five each); Levi Lee Road and Ind. 15, CRs 700S and 700W, Ind. 25 and Ferguson Road, Armstrong Road and CR 200E, U.S. 30 and CR 250E and Ind. 19 and CR 1350N (four each); and County Farm Road and CR 300S (three).
