LEESBURG – The 2012 Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund Gala and Auction was at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club in Leesburg Saturday night.

It was the 13th year for the event attended by 120 people including cancer survivors, those battling the disease and supporters.

The Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund, administered by K21 Health Foundation, provides assistance to financially eligible residents of Kosciusko County who are suffering from cancer.

The purpose of the fund is to relieve some of the financial strain that accompanies cancer diagnosis.

The assistance provided from the fund includes  items such as rent or mortgage payments, utilities, insurance, food, cary payment and prescription medications.

During the gala and auction there was a live, silent, and instant auction when people could bid on items to raise money for the Cancer Care Fund.

Julia Moore, mother of Bailey Moore, spoke about her daughter’s battle with leukemia.

Bailey, from Leesburg, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in July 2010. She died in March 2011 at age 14.

Moore said when a child has leukemia it is easy to rush through the many levels of denial, but a parent finally accepts the news and begins to grasp it.

“You gain your strength from the simple actions of getting drinks for them and helping them take a bath,” Moore said.

Moore said her family would jump at the opportunity to go through the journey again just to hear her daughter’s voice and see the sparkle in her eyes one more time.

Thomas Tuttle Sr. and Jo Lemon, who started KCCCF in 1986, were honored for their service with the Hero for the Cause Award.

Dave Stell presented the awards to Tuttle and Lemon.

Tuttle and Lemon put together a group of volunteers who raised more than $1.5 million through 1999 that was given to the American Cancer Society.

Tuttle thanked the Lake Wawasee homeowners and other volunteers who donated funds over the years.

He also thanked the K21 Foundation for their work in keeping the fund going.

Lemon said the fund is a great cause that unites people together.

“We have been blessed with wonderful, willing volunteers giving time and talent and money,” Lemon said.
