Kolbe on Gun Rights

Editor, Times-Union:
I favor the right to bear arms as provided in the Second  Amendment to the United States Constitution. Guns have been a part of our family for generations and my children are avid hunters. I received my first gun from my father when I was 12 years old. When I served as prosecuting attorney there were times when I found it necessary to carry a concealed weapon for my own protection. On more than one occasion I was subject to death threats as a result of my professional role, as have been many of my colleagues who currently or have previously served as prosecutors.
What I do not favor is extremist organizations with links to white supremacists and potential domestic terrorists. For this reason, unlike my opponent, I would never receive nor would I accept the endorsement of the Gun Owners of America. My opponent received the GOA endorsement and when asked if he would reject it, he said he proudly accepted it. The leader of that organization has appeared and spoken at a conference with white supremacists and members of the “Christian” Identity movement. CIs believe that only white people have souls and the more extreme CIs believe that the Jewish people are the seed of Satan. They believe that northern European Caucasians are the true Israelites. The leader of the Gun Owners of America has written a book titled “Armed Citizens Victorious” based upon the death squads in Guatemala and the Philippines.
These sort of extremist organizations should alarm us all, including true conservatives and traditional Republicans.
Birds of a feather do, indeed, flock together, and I will never be a part of such a flock.
