The Indiana Farm Bureau and the Indiana Small Rural Schools Association recently named Judy A. Kinsey, fourth-grade teacher at Leesburg Elementary, as the Indiana Small Rural School Association's Teacher of the Year. This is a new award designed to recognize the quality of teachers in Indiana's rural communities, and Kinsey is its first recipient. In recognition of her selection, Kinsey received a $1,000 check from Farm Bureau and a plaque from ISRSA.

"There is no job more important than teaching our children, and for 29 years Judy Kinsey has worked tirelessly for her students and for her community," said Dr. Mary Lou Nay, president of the ISRSA. "I'm glad that we were able to recognize her accomplishments. Indiana's rural schools have many outstanding educators, and Judy represents this cadre of quality educators."

This commitment to community is evident in Kinsey's application for this award, as she wrote: "Community is the foundation of everything I do as a teacher. Toward that end, I want my students to learn beyond the textbook, to care about others, to care about community, to care about America. Since I teach fourth grade in a small town school, I have the pleasure of allowing Indiana history to drive the curriculum I teach."

Kinsey's students benefit from her hands-on approach to learning. "Stepping out of the classroom is one of the best ways to learn," she said.

With that in mind, she guides her fourth-grade students on frequent field trips to museums, parks and community centers to observe and interact with the world around them.

In addition to her award, Kinsey will sit on the board of the ISRSA as a teacher adviser.

The elementary teacher also was the Kosciusko County Soil and Water District's 2003 Teacher of the Year.

She and her students have been asked to present their projects at the annual conference of the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers as well as in Nature's Classroom, an annual workshop for teachers interested in natural resource education.

Most recently she partnered with the district to develop a seasonal wetlands study on the Beyer Trail portion of the Lake City Greenway. Her input was instrumental in securing grant funds from the KEYS program to purchase equipment for the wetlands study.

Kinsey also was named the 2003 Warsaw School Corp. Teacher of the Year. [[In-content Ad]]
