Kindergarten

Editor, Times-Union:

I just read the front page article (3-25-2011) that Warsaw Schools is researching full-day kindergarten (FDK).

Numerous, unbiased (no school board or teacher associations) studies have proven that there is no additional benefit to children who have attended FDK to those children having attending rational half-day kindergarten (1/2DK). There is a very short term gain but by the third grade, children of FDK or 1/2DK test virtually the same and by the fifth grade there is absolutely no difference.

FDK is not only a waste of taxpayer money but also just a government-funded baby-sitter program. Especially in these tough economic times, spending more taxpayer money on needless programs in our county and state is a gross misallocation of limited financial resources. More money is not the answer. Quality (not quantity) teaching is and FDK is not.
