This morning in Kosciusko County Superior Court I, a Kentucky woman was sentenced to six years in the Indiana Department of Corrections on two counts of forgery.

Kathryn Marie Lawrence, 42, of Morehead, Ky., was sentenced to two three-year sentences to be served consecutively, according to her plea deal. Lawrence plead guilty to  two Class C felonies. In return, two counts of theft were dismissed.

During the hearing, Superior Court I Judge Duane Huffer asked Prosecuting Attorney Dan Hampton if he had any comments on the pre-sentence investigation report prior to sentencing.

“The PSI has four to five pages of previous criminal history, which I think speaks for itself,” Hampton said.

On the other hand, Lawrence’s attorney, Michael W. Reed, avoided the criminal history and focused more on what Lawrence has accomplished since incarceration.

“I would like the court to take into consideration her statement from the letter she wrote. There is also a letter from the victim, a letter from her daughter and a letter from the assistant chaplain at the Kosciucko County Jail, as  well as a letter from the Beaman Home,” Reed said. “There is also a (Domestic Violence Education) certificate that shows she has finished the program.”

Huffer accepted the plea deal and had a few words for Lawrence.

“Your record's too long,” Huffer said. “Theft, check deception, theft, check deception, theft and the letter you write is the same each time. I agree with the state that by entering into the plea agreement you got a good deal.”

In addition to six years in prison, Lawrence was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $150 as well as a fine of $125 to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. Lawrence was credited with 186 days in jail, given good time is 372 days off the sentence given.[[In-content Ad]]
