He was born Nov. 7, 1931, in Kosciusko County, to Cloyce and Bernice Detwiler Hoffer. On July 19, 1953, he married Carol Parks, who survives.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he retired as owner and operator of Hoffer Excavating and later Hoffer Crane Service, Atwood. He owned Doozy's Ice Cream & Sub Shop, Atwood, from 1992-98. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-52, where he was a paratrooper. He was a layleader of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Atwood. He was very active as a Red Cross volunteer, giving 14 gallons and 3 pints of blood over his lifetime. He also assisted with many blood drives. He obtained his pilots license in 1999, and loved flying. He also loved building cars, attending car shows and participating parades.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mollie (and spouse Jack) Kintzel, Warsaw; two sons, Kip (and spouse Ingle) Hoffer, Linton, and Lyle (and spouse Phyllis) Hoffer, Atwood; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janet (and spouse Ron) Buchholz, Leesburg, and Joanne Foster, Watkinsville, Ga.; three brothers, Wayne (and spouse Martha) Hoffer, Arizona; DeVoe (and spouse Lumi) Hoffer, New Paris; and DeVon (and spouse Fran) Hoffer, Nappanee. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, a daughter-in-law and his parents.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Atwood, with the Revs. Michael Lawson and Milton Gould officiating. Burial will be in Leesburg Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
