Kosciusko Development Inc. executive board members went over the books with CPA Dana Krull Wednesday, reviewing the results of his audit for 2000 and 2001.

Statements of KDI's financial position show a balance of $72,684.39 for Dec. 31, 2000, and $70,537.08 for Dec. 31, 2001.

In her report, director Joy McCarthy-Sessing said she attended a groundbreaking in Boggs Industrial Park recently for Barker Keepsakes, which is building a records storage facility.

She also said Whimet Inc., which purchased the North Detroit Street Sun Metal facility, received tax abatements from Warsaw recently. The company also is paying for infrastructure to bring water to the building for fire protection.

McCarthy-Sessing said although there is some money in the state's Industrial Development Grant fund for such projects, approval usually takes three months or more.

She said the Indiana Economic Development Association's summer meeting held at the chamber June 21 and 22 was a success.

McCarthy-Sessing said she has requested contributions from each government unit - county, city and towns - except Milford, which won't meet again until July.

Economic development coordinator Jean Gosney said a survey has been sent to businesses concerning work force skills for entry level production workers.

Recipients are asked to gauge a number of math and technical skills and answer four questions about hiring needs.

In other business, the board:

• Heard that a seminar - Preparing Your Business Plan - will be held Aug. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the chamber.

Presented by South Bend Small Business Development Center and Service Corps of Retired Executives, the cost is $20.

Workshop topics include purpose and content, sources of information and what bankers look for in a business plan.

• Was reminded that the seminar regarding international trade for ag-related businesses, sponsored by the International Trade Division of the Indiana Department of Commerce, is Sept. 10 at the Holiday Inn Express from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

• Heard that 11 requests for information regarding available commercial and industrial properties were fielded.

• Approved a wage survey by Ergo Resource Management, Syracuse, at a cost of $1,850. It will be distributed to 120 companies.

John Byrd asked that the survey ask how many employees will retire in the next five years and in the next 10 years.

• Heard the Indiana Department of Commerce plans to establish 12 regional offices throughout the state. A "commerce update" meeting is set in South Bend July 22 to give details on the change.

• Heard the Indiana Business Modernization and Technology Corp. is sponsoring a workshop on "lean manufacturing" in Warsaw at the Center Lake Pavilion Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Costs are $295 per person with discount rates for two or more.

• Set the next meeting for Aug. 28. [[In-content Ad]]
