Zimmer. DePuy. Biomet. Othy. What does the biomedical industry mean to the county?
The answer, and the means to strengthen its positive effects, will be presented next month at the Ramada Plaza, according to Joy McCarthy-Sessing.
McCarthy-Sessing, president of Kosciusko Development Inc., told the KDI board of directors Wednesday that the Battelle Institute's final report will be presented Feb. 22.
KDI sponsored the $36,000 report on the local biomedical industry. Plans are to implement the Institute's recommendations and findings as soon as possible.
The nominating committee selected a slate of officers and the following men were approved: Randy Vutech, chairman; Dennis Beville, vice chairman; Jim Tinkey, treasurer; and Brad Bishop, secretary.
Executive committee members include the officers and McCarthy-Sessing.
Julia Van DeWater, outgoing chairwoman, was thanked for her year of service.
In her president's report, McCarthy-Sessing said work on the Danco project was proceeding. Danco is a Sofamor Danek supplier that iodizes titanium. Danco's other plant is in Arcadia, Calif.
McCarthy-Sessing said in many cases companies looking to relocate want large (80,000 square feet and larger) vacant buildings. These ready-to-move-into structures are in short supply here.
Syracuse Town Manager Brian Redshaw commented on the spate of layoffs by companies in his town. He said there was some confusion about the number of people affected, saying 192 people were out of work when OMC closed its doors and Dana Corp. laid off 200 employees on a temporary basis.
It is hoped another boat company will move into the OMC facility as the area has workers experienced in that field.
The board also heard:
• Fort Wayne Mayor Graham Richard has extended an invitation to KDI to join his regional economic group, comprising many northeast Indiana counties.
He plans to visit the Chamber offices March 7 at 10 a.m. along with Fort Wayne economic development executive Karen Goldner, to outline the regional program.
• Lowe's has broken ground at the northwest quadrant of U.S. 30 and Ind 15. The Wal-Mart Corp. plans to follow suit next door on March 1. The stores will be open in the fall.
• Othy Inc. plans to move its administrative offices to Market Street in the fomer Pillbox Drug Store location.
• Approved an agreement with the city of Warsaw for a $1,500 appropriation.
• End-of-year financial statements were presented.
KDI funding comes from city and county agreements, state grants and and donations from the private sector. [[In-content Ad]]
