For each child suffering from a medical condition, a family struggles. They juggle their need to work in order to provide an income and health insurance, with their child's need for them to be present while they are being treated.
The juggling act often requires many trips from northern Indiana to Indianapolis, and with the trip comes expenses like gasoline, overnight lodging, meals out, and babysitting for their children still at home. Sometimes a parent must choose between unpaid time off work to be with their child, and having enough money to pay a utility bill.
A new fund at the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, the Kosciusko County Riley Kids Fund, will provide financial relief to families of children receiving care at Riley and will provide operating dollars to Riley to help them continue their specialized care to children.
The fund was established by business partners, Alan Alderfer and Mike Bergen, of Alderfer Bergen and Company. Both Alderfer and Bergen have had children served by Riley. Bergen's son, Ben, has fully recovered from his medical condition. Alderfer's daughter, Katherine, continues her journey with the help of Riley and its medical team. Alderfer and Bergen's goal is to raise $100,000 for the fund.
"Mike and I feel fortunate to have had the financial resources we needed to provide for our families and access the care provided by Riley," said Alderfer. "However, not every family can say the same. That's why we started this fund. We want every child and every family to get the medical care needed and have to worry less about how they are going to pay for all the travel and life experiences during what can be a financially devastating time."
Gifts to The Kosciusko County Riley Kids Fund may be made by writing a check to the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, 102 E Market Street, Warsaw, IN, 46580. Write "Riley" in the memo line.[[In-content Ad]]
