K21's Support of Good Samaritan Passes $2 Million

By Staff Report-

The K21 Health Foundation’s cumulative support of the Good Samaritan Fund surpassed the $2 million mark with a recent grant from K21 to the Kosciusko County Community Foundation for $200,000.

The Good Samaritan Fund was established by the late Ethel Vandermark in 1997 to provide financial assistance to families who are experiencing a medical crisis. In 1999, the K21 Health Foundation began providing support to the program by starting a partnering fund at the Community Foundation.

“Having a fund and program already established allowed K21 to find an impact very early in our existence, and we’ve been supporting this program significantly ever since,” shared Rich Haddad, K21 president and CEO. “The program is a great connection to or missions by helping those in need that are facing medical and health issues in their lives.”

“One of the reasons that the partnership between the Community Foundation and K21 Health Foundation is significant is because K21 could have established their own fund to help families who were struggling due to a medical crisis. Instead, they saw a vehicle that was already working toward that goal and equipped the Good Samaritan Fund to reach exponentially more families than we could previously,” said Community Foundation Executive Director Suzie Light.

More than 80 percent of the assistance provided to families each year comes from the K21 portion of the program.

The Good Samaritan Fund is facilitated by Laura Cooper, a social worker at the K21 Health Pavilion, 1515 Provident Drive, Warsaw. Cooper said that without assistance from the Good Samaritan Fund many elderly people would have to choose between obtaining medical services or buying groceries, and many families with children being served would have to choose between paying utilities or making a needed out-of-town trip to obtain medical care for their child.

K21 Health Foundation exists for the benefit of Kosciusko County citizens to ensure health care services are provided, and to advance prevention and healthy lifestyles.
