The grant will allow renovations to be made to the former Ken Anderson Films building that will be turned into a homeless shelter for men, women and children.
A men’s shelter is currently at 425 S. Buffalo St., and a women’s and children’s shelter is at 337 N. Buffalo St.
The city approved the building at 1520 E. Winona Ave. to be used as a homeless shelter to house everyone under one roof. Plans are for the shelter to open in January, according to Eric Lane, Fellowship Missions executive director.
K21 Foundation also provided $25,000 for the purchase of new equipment for the shelter.
The new shelter will have increased capacity for clients, rooms that will keep homeless families together, and a large dining room and meeting space that will host The Gathering, which is a bi-monthly community meal currently offered at the Center Lake Pavilion.
“K21 appreciates Fellowships Missions’ approach to not only providing emergency shelter to those in need in our community, but also their vision and plan to help clients obtain self-sufficiency,” said Rich Haddad, K21 chief executive officer.
“With our matching grant, we hope to incentivize and challenge individuals and businesses in the community to donate to this great organization,” he continued.
Lane said he believes this new facility will take its effectiveness to another level.
“To do all that we’ve done for our clients ‘in spite’ of our facility limitations has been amazing. It is mostly a tribute to the wonderful volunteer network we have in our community,” Lane said.
