The grant was announced Wednesday at the K21 Health Services Pavilion in Warsaw.
Approximately 50 people were on hand to hear the news, including K21 Health Foundation staff and board members and YMCA staff and supporters.
Chad Zaucha, YMCA CEO, announced plans for the development of a new YMCA facility at U.S. 30 and Mariner Drive, north of the new Combined Community Services facility. Moake Park Architecture, Fort Wayne, provided artist renderings of the new facility.
The YMCA acquired about 37 acres of property on U.S. 30 and Mariner Drive in January. The property was rezoned and annexed by the city.
The new YMCA facility will replace the existing one on Smith Street that is aging, according to Zaucha. Plans are for the North Webster location to remain open.
Initial plans for the new YMCA include a health and wellness center, lap pool, instructional warm water pool, multi-purpose gathering spaces, a youth and teen center, a double gymnasium and outdoor space for day camp.
The new facility is projected to open in early 2015, depending on fundraising efforts, Zaucha said.
The cost of the new facility is $12 million. YMCA has raised $2 million, K21 Health Foundation has donated $2 million and $8 million still needs to be raised through support from individuals, businesses, collaborative partners and other foundations.
“Our community and the needs of our families have changed dramatically since the Y on Smith Street opened in 1965,” Zaucha said. “We've undergone numerous renovations and expansions, but a new Y is needed to continue our community building work for generations to come.”
Zaucha said the K21 Health Foundation’s gift is an honor and encouragement to receive.
“The new Y will create opportunities for thousands more Kosciusko County children, adults and families to improve and maintain their health,” he said.
Zaucha said it is the YMCA’s goal to promote health, family values and youth development.
“We’ll be able to serve more kids after school, provide a gathering place for people from all walks of life to come together, offer seniors a place to stay physically and socially active and provide a healthy environment for families to spend time together.”
Rich Haddad, K21 Health Foundation president, said K21 Health Foundation’s mission is to exist for the benefit of Kosciusko County citizens.
Goals are to ensure health care services are provided and healthy lifestyles are advanced.
"From diabetes prevention to programs tailored for those new to exercise and physically active children's programs, the Y is a place for all ages and abilities to find support for a healthier lifestyle,” Haddad said.
