Kosciusko 21st Century Foundation Inc. recently donated a parcel of wetlands to Warsaw.

The property will be used for the Beyer Farm Trail segment of the Lake City Greenway project.

A boardwalk, connecting the Kosciusko Community Hospital property with Pike Lake Park, will be constructed through the wetland.

The project will highlight natural features of the site including native vegetation, wildlife and the function of the wetland with a series of informational markers. Construction is set to begin in March.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has contributed $100,000 for the wetlands boardwalk.

Overall, the Lake City Greenway project will connect the communities of Warsaw, Winona Lake and several unincorporated areas in the county with a series of trails.

The 8-foot-wide path will begin at the Chinworth bridge west of the city on Lake Street/Old U.S. 30 and go east 8.4 miles to the Winona Lake town limits. In Winona Lake the trail winds through town ending at Roy Street.

The trails will promote healthy family activities such as walking, jogging, bicycling and skating. A two-mile segment of the trail on the west side of Warsaw is scheduled for construction this summer.

"The Greenway project compliments K21's mission of improving the health and wellness of our community citizens," said K21 Foundation president Willis Alt. "The trails will give the public different places to go to enjoy the beauty of Kosciusko County while reaping the benefits of exercise."

In September, 28.6 acres of the wetland area were purchased from Robert J. McMorran Jr. at a cost of $38,000. The funds came in the form of securities given by donors who wish to remain anonymous.

Funding for the greenway has come from Build Indiana Funds, the Indiana Department of Transportation's Transportation Enhancement Program., R.R. Donnelley & Sons, National City Bank, Kosciusko County Foundation as well as private donations.

Kosciusko 21st Century Foundation Inc. is dedicated to maintaining an endowment to ensure health care facilities remain in Kosciusko County and is committed to improving community health and wellness through investments and grants.
