WINONA LAKE - The Just Peachey Fund representatives received permission from the town council Tuesday to sponsor "A Day At The Lake" fund-raiser in September.
Connie Rufenbarger and Carolyn Condon said a 5K walk is planned as well as a tour of five homes. The speaker, they said, would be Dr. Anna Maria Storniolo from the Indiana University School of Medicine.
The Catherine Peachey Fund raises money for breast cancer research and early detection.
"We're hoping for a beautiful fall day to attract more than 1,000 people with a walk and a picnic," Condon said. "We plan for a statewide audience."
Jeff Murray from Stonehenge Golf Club appeared before the board requesting an enabling ordinance to support his liquor license to continue to sell alcohol by the drink.
Murray said he was advised by the Alcoholic Beverage Commission to approach the board.
The request was referred to town attorney James Walmer for review. The Stonehenge permit expires in July.
Five trash pickup bids were opened and read. Quotes were received from Waste Management, for $11.67 per unit per month; Wabash Valley Refuse, at $7.99 per month; AmeriWaste for $7.60 per month; Borden Waste to Waste, $12.60 per month; and Stafford Waste for $8 per month. Several alternate bids also were given.
The board took the bids under advisement and will make recommendations next month.
Also under review were three bids for property, casualty, liability and police-professional insurance for the town. JMS Insurance bid $28,176; Insurance Alliance bid $16,869 and Beauchamp and McSpadden for $16,349.
Town engineer Larry Long said a preconstruction meeting with Niblock Excavating representatives will be Wednesday morning to discuss work on College Avenue. The company has received a notice to proceed with the reconstruction of the street.
Long also acknowledged the condition of CR 250E. He said the pavement has broken up quite a bit.
Patching by the street department has provided a temporary fix. However, Long advised the council to consider a patch overlay at a cost of $10,000 until the new surface is laid from Pierceton Road to Wooster Road in 2002.
In other business the board:
• Heard from Eldon and Jessica Gaither, 114 14th St., regarding the condition of their neighborhood, which Mrs. Gaither described as "a slum, a ghetto" along 14th and 15th streets from Chestnut Street to King's Highway.
"We need help," she said, describing trash in yards and a vehicle that was tagged for removal in January and still sits on the street.
Town manager Craig Allebach said some of the problems fall to the police department and others to the building inspector, Dick Leaf.
• Heard a house would be moved from Fourth and Chestnut streets to East Canal and Auditorium today.
• The Grace Brass Quintet will play April 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Artisan Court.
• The Reneker Dinner is slated at Westminster Hall, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $11.50 and can be purchased at town hall.
• Heard the fire department plans a Pizza Hut fund-raiser May 8 and a carwash May 12 to repair and purchase fire equipment.
Town council members are Jeff Carroll, Craig Snow, Jerry Clevenger and Rolly Ortega. David Delp was absent. [[In-content Ad]]
