Junior Shirey, 74, of Mentone (Palestine Lake), died at 9 a.m. Jan. 24, 2012, in his residence, surrounded by his family,  after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Warsaw, to Virgil V. Sr. and Freda Jontz Shirey. On April 20, 1957, in Columbia City, he married Marilyn Anderson, who survives.

Living in Kosciusko County most of his life, he was a lineman for Marshall County REMC and Kosciusko REMC for 35 years, retiring in 2001. He graduated from Mentone High School in 1955. He was a member of Bourbon American Legion and Warsaw Moose Lodge. He enjoyed golfing with Marilyn and his sons. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was organized, strict but fair,  was a good husband who worked hard and was a good provider. He enjoyed a wide age range of friends. In younger days, the family would travel which might include camping and exploring different zoos as they went. He was fun-loving and  would do anything for anyone.
Also surviving are two sons, Mark (and spouse Cindy) Shirey, Warsaw, and Bryan Shirey, Marietta (Atlanta), Ga.; five grandchildren:    Amber Shirey (and spouse Zaven Papakhian), Portland, Ore.; Scott Shirey, Bourbon; Kyle Shirey, Austin, Texas; and Taylor and Tanner Stiver, both of Warsaw. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Shirey, and a brother, Jerry Shirey.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, officiated by Pastor James Archambeault of New Life Tabernacle Church, Kendallville. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Calling is from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
