Julian Center Director Speaks At Center Lake
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Ann DeLaney, executive director of The Julian Center in Indianapolis, spoke at Center Lake Pavilion Wednesday.
The Julian Center is a one-stop facility which provides comprehensive services for victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. At some point during counseling and therapy sessions provided at The Julian Center, children are asked to draw the one thing they would like more than anything else in the world. DeLaney held up a picture drawn by an 8-year-old who once was at The Julian Center with his mother. The picture, drawn with crayons, is of a man standing behind bars. The caption reads "My Dream - IN JAIL FOREVER." The child's drawing was of his father.
Domestic violence is a traumatic experience that can affect the victims - most often, women and children - for a lifetime, DeLaney said.
She added that effective counseling and case management by trained, qualified staff is very important so victims can regain their confidence and dignity as soon as possible. With proper counseling and support, their hope for the future is rekindled, and they can again take control of their lives.
The number of incidents of violent crimes is a widespread social problem. DeLaney discussed the importance of partnering with all available resources in a community, in an effort to improve education and public awareness, and provide the best services and assistance possible for the victims. However, rather than only providing assistance to victims after a crime, there is much more that can be done to help prevent domestic violence before it happens.
Mayor Ernie Wiggins thanked DeLaney for coming to Warsaw and closed the meeting by saying, "There are a lot of people that will say we can't afford to do this. My comment is, we can't afford not to do this. We just need to get together and get this thing moving."
