She was born Sept. 16, 1927, in Columbia City, to John F. and Rosena A. Hartman Karst. On June 29, 1980, she married Robert L. McConnell, who died Jan. 18, 2010.
They always made their home at Little Cedar Lake.
She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1945 and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. A nurse for many years, her working career included Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis, Illinois Research & Education in Chicago, the office of Dr. Jerome Wait after returning to the Columbia City area, and she retired from Whitley County Memorial Hospital in 1991.
She was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, and she also volunteered for many years at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
Surviving are four children: C. Bryan Wait M.D., and Shawn D. (and spouse Teresa) Wait, all of Columbia City; Karen M. (and spouse Michael) Cook, Bloomfield; Mark A. Wait, Grovertown; a stepdaughter, Joyce PeGan, Arizona; 12 grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; seven great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine Reiff, North Webster. She was preceded in death by six brothers: Raymond L., Henry L., Frank L., Julius S., Robert E. and Gerald Karst; and three sisters: Kathryn McCoy, Edna McCoy and Pauline Perry.
A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 S. Line St., Columbia City. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
