JACKSON, Mich. – Joy A. Smith Miller, 84, of Jackson, Mich., passed away Oct. 18, 2011, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

She was born July 2, 1927, in Jackson, to Claude J.  and Glenys A. Smith Rogers, and lived a full and splendid life. In 1948, she married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Miller, beginning a union and partnership of more than 50 years. He preceded her in death.

She was a 1945 graduate of Jackson High School and received an associate degree in science from Jackson Junior College in 1947. Her life was always about others, and her career and activities exemplified that. She worked for several years at Sparton Electronics, retired from the advertising department at Jacobson’s and assisted her husband in his business, Miller Sign Co. She was also a sewing instructor, involved in the HOSTS Program at the former Allen School, volunteered for the American Red Cross, was a member of the Women’s Fez Club, Jackson Women’s Club, Fern Leaf Chapter of the Eastern Star and a 70- year member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She loved playing cards with friends, camping, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, was an excellent seamstress and tried to enjoy every moment of her life despite her illnesses. Above all else, however, she enjoyed simply being in the company of friends and her beautiful family.

Survived are her loving daughters, Claudia (and spouse Charlie) Bovee, Jackson, and Cathy (and spouse Jim) Murdock, Concord. She was the beloved “Nani Joy” to Alison and Emily Bovee, Travis Murdock and Kellie (and spouse Ryan) Mulnix, adoring great-grandson, Manning Mulnix, and two step-granddaughters, Dawn Resor and Angela Burrow. She is also survived by two brothers, Phil Smith, Leesburg, Fla., and Jon (and spouse Linda) Smith, Warsaw; many nieces and nephews; aunt, Betty Ward, Jackson; and a close circle of dear friends. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Claude Jr. and Harold.

Services will be at  11 a.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 925 Backus St., Jackson.

Calling is from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
