He was born March 28, 1933, in Fort Wayne, to John W. and Martha Linvill Hancock Sr.
He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1952 and spent the majority of his life in Columbia City. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55, earning the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Ribbon. He was former owner of the Columbia Theater and managed Bituminous Materials/Elf Asphalt, Columbia City and Warsaw, from 1965-92. After his retirement he worked at Wilbys Mini-Mart, Warsaw. He was an avid fisherman and bird watcher; was a member of Moose Lodge 3000; was a volunteer fireman for the Columbia City Fire Department; and a former member of Elks Lodge and American Legion. He was a livelong member of the American Hot Rod Association and won a national title one year and another year finished runnerup. He also held track records at the Avilla Raceways for many years.
Surviving are his longtime companion, Janet Ross, Columbia City; a daughter, Lynne (and spouse Roger) Drudge, Columbia City; two sons, Nick (and spouse Tamera) Hancock, Huntington, and Lowell (and spouse Barbara) Hancock, Centennial, Colo.; a sister, Carol Loos, Rome City; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Julie Hancock.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Burial will be private.
Calling is from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
