John Robert Russell, 69, Silver Lake, passed away at 2 a.m. Oct. 5, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 21, 1945, in Detroit, Mich., to Albert and Mary Kathleen Savage Russell. He was united in marriage June 21, 1974, in Peru, to Shirley Miller Yount, his wife of 40 years, who survives in Silver Lake.
He was a 1963 graduate of Catholic Central High School, Detroit, and briefly attended the Jesuit Seminary following high school. He graduated from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1967. He lived in the Silver Lake area for the last 38 years. He was semi-retired as a self-employed owner and builder, building and managing apartments. He attended Warsaw Community Church.
Also surviving are two daughters, Susan (and spouse Terry) Schoettmer, and Tina M. Prater, Warsaw; his son, Matthew John (and spouse Lynda) Vivian, Plymouth, Mich.; his sister, Marilyn (and spouse Rick) Ross, Simpsonville, Ky.; eight grandchildren; Ryan, Levi, Brandin, Bradey, Ariel, Brooklynn, Fischer and Lola; his cousin, Mary Sue (and spouse Mark) Veltman, Fenton, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard Russell.
A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Jeff Pfeifer officiating. Burial will be privately held in Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake.
Calling is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
