He was born March 26, 1938, in Nappanee, to Gerald and Irene Bickel Stahly.
A 1956 Nappanee High School graduate, he graduated from Purdue University in 1960 and earned a master's degree from Indiana University in 1962. In 1971, he received a master's degree in geology from the University of Notre Dame. He retired from South Bend Adams High School after 41 years of teaching. He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, a former employee of the South Bend Parks Department, served as a 4-H leader for many years and helped introduce 4-H into the South Bend School System. He is a past president of the Nappanee Lions Club and served as a 4-H judge in Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, St. Joseph and Marshall counties. He was a member of Parents Without Partners and First Mennonite Church.
Surviving are two sons, David (and spouse Mary) Stahly, Nappanee, and Frederick (and spouse Susan) Stahly, Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Mennonite Church with the Rev. Janet McFall-Brown officiating. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery, Nappanee.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
