NAPPANEE – John Henry L. Hochstetler, 77, of 2641 Beech Road, Nappanee, died at 10:45 a.m. Dec. 29, 2011, in his residence, after an extended illness.
He was born Aug. 8, 1934, in Kosciusko County, to Levi R. and Tillie Schmucker Hochstetler. On Sept. 4, 1958, in Middlebury, he married Esther Hostetler, who survives.
A lifetime area resident, he was a retired carpenter and farmer and a member and retired bishop of Old Order Amish Church.
Also surviving are two sons, Howard D. (and spouse Sharon) Hochstetler and Johnnie R. (and spouse Brenda) Hochstetler, all of Bremen; eight daughters, Linda S. (and spouse Ervin L.) Bontrager, Shipshewana; Sarah L. (and spouse Mahlon Lee) Bontrager, Nora J. (and spouse Arlin) Hershberger, Barbara E. (and spouse Merle) Hershberger, Laura M. (and spouse Lyle) Yoder, all of Nappanee; Etta F. (and spouse Morris) Miller, Milford; Sharon K. (and spouse Jerry) Kuhns, Ruth A. (and spouse Norman) Borkholder, all of Bremen; and Esther E. (and spouse Dale R.) Borkholder, New Paris;  59 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; 10 brothers, Melvin (and spouse Esther) Hochstetler, Princeton, Ky.; Elmer (and spouse Mary) Hochstetler, Bellefontaine, Ohio; Jonas Hochstetler, Bremen; Edward (and spouse Katie) Hochstetler, Danville, Ohio; Edwin (and spouse Emma) Hochstetler, Howard, Ohio; Levi Jr. (and spouse Betty) Hochstetler, Goshen; Rudy (and spouse Carol) Hochstetler, Milford; Lamar (and spouse Lizzie)  Hochstetler and Moses Lee Hochstetler, all of Nappanee; and Ray Hochstetler, Butler, Ohio; and sisters, Lydia Mae Stoltzfus, Howard, and Mary (and spouse Ura) Chupp, and Esther (and spouse Lester) Helmuth, all of Nappanee. He was preceded in death by a son, a grandson and three infant brothers.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the family residence with The Home Ministry of the Old Order Amish Church officiating. Burial will be in Weldy Cemetery. 
Calling is after 2 p.m. today and all day Saturday at the family residence.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
