PLYMOUTH – John W. Harman, 90, of Plymouth, went to be with the Lord March 26, 2012.

He was born July 27, 1921, in Atwood, to Marshall and Reah Montel Harman. On April 29, 1961, he married Theresa Augustine, of South Bend, who survives.

He was a lifelong “frustrated Chicago Cubs fan and I.U. fan.” His favorite pastimes were attending and watching ball games and spending time on the golf course with his family and friends.

In 1939, he graduated from Warsaw High School. In December 1941, he heard the call to defend our country and joined the U.S. Navy. He completed his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago, Ill., in the spring of 1942, and served valiantly in the Pacific Theatre as a radioman 1st Class until the end of the war in 1945. He was a member of Warsaw American Legion Post 49 and Plymouth Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1162.

After the war, he completed his education at Indiana University, Bloomington, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1948.

He and his wife settled into their first home in Niles, Mich. In April 1974, he and his family moved to Plymouth where he lived the remainder of his life.

For a career, he worked for The Traveler’s and later Underwriters Adjusting Co. and Continental Insurance, as an insurance adjuster, until his first retirement in 1987. For the next 21 years, he drove motor homes, primarily for Quality Drive-Away, Goshen. In 2008, he retired for the final time at 86. He was a very hard worker.

He was a believer, belonging to First United Methodist Church, Plymouth. His wit, humor, love of sports, love for I.U. and love for his family and grandchildren, will be sorely missed. He was quite a guy.

He is in glory with his heavenly Father and has received the honor of a job well done.

Also surviving are four children: Mark (and spouse Coyne) Harman, South Carolina; Mary Swinehart and John (and spouse Becky) Harman, all of Fort Wayne;  and Tim (and spouse Jennifer) Harman, Bremen; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Kelsey Swinehart; and three sisters.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, with the Rev. Larry Marhanka officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Cemetery, Plymouth, with military graveside honors by members of American Legion Post 27, VFW Post 3362 and Disabled American Veterans.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
