He was born Feb. 24, 1941, in Floyd County, Ky., to John and Myrtle Hale Helton, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 12, 1960, he married Carolyn J. Kline, who died Sept. 22, 2010.
He was a journeyman welder at Fisher Body, Marion, for 31 years, retiring in 1998. He came to Silver Lake from Kentucky in 1954. His passion was his family and he enjoyed spending the winter in Florida.
Surviving are a son, Gary E. (and spouse Melanie) Helton, Roann; two daughters, Kimmy K. (and spouse Dennis) Cook, Dresden, Tenn., and Jenny C. Helton, North Manchester; three brothers, Fred (and spouse Lourena) Helton, Warsaw, and Don (and spouse Janet) Helton and Ellis (and spouse Mary) Helton, all of Silver Lake; two sisters, Elsie Dotson, Prestonsburg, Ky., and Emma Slone, Silver Lake; six grandchildren, Blake A. (and spouse Rachel) Harper, Brooke O. Helton, Paige V. Helton and Peyton J. Helton, all of Roann, and Cassie J. Cook and Denise R. Cook, both of Dresden, Tenn; three sisters-in-law: Sylvia Helton, Silver Lake; Marilyn (and spouse Larry) Vetor, North Manchester; and Helen Jackson, Servia; three brothers-in-law, Marvin Phillips, Roann, and Donny (and spouse Susie) Kline and Bill Kline, all of North Manchester; and 36 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and James Willard Helton, and two sisters, Thelma Hicks and Irene Phillips.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at McKee Mortuary, 1401 Ind. 114W, North Manchester, with Pastor Terry Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
