He was born June 1, 1934, in White County, to Damen Dale and Ruby Swartzell Patterson. On July 3, 1963, he married Barbara Quaney, who survives.
He was a resident of Bourbon since early childhood. He graduated from Bourbon High School in 1952.
He retired from Biomet Inc., Warsaw, as a shippingclerk. He also had worked at Bendix Corp. and Orthopedic Equipment Co.
He was a faithful member of the First United Church of Christ, Bourbon. He loved gardening, sports of all kinds and was an umpire for softball games. He also was noted for his dedication as an assistant campfire leader for more than 20 years.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He also was a member of Bourbon American Legion Post 424.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon (and spouse Michael) Howell, Milford, and Samantha (and spouse Charles) Howard, Silver Lake; four sisters: Marilyn Klann, New Buffalo, Mich.; Eleanor (and spouse Edward) Gammill, South Bend; Rita (and spouse Charles) Hyde, Etna Green; Carol Bennett, Bremen; three brothers: William (and spouse Patricia) Patterson, Mishawaka; Robert (and spouse Leslie) Patterson, Lagro; Roger (and spouse Janice) Patterson, Bremen; and also was blessed with four grandchildren: Ean and Aric Howard, and Chase and Ethan Howell. He was preceded in death by two sisters, June Stayton and Joyce Patterson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Church of Christ, Bourbon, with Rev. Linda Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in Summit Chapel Cemetery, Bourbon, with military honors.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
