NAPPANEE – John E. Mast, 85, of Nappanee, died at 11:15 p.m. May 3, 2013, in Elkhart General Hospital of a brain hemorrhage.
He was born June 20, 1927, in Thomas, Okla., to Eli J. and Anna Yuhtzy Mast. On Jan. 11, 1951, he married Sarah Hochstetler, who died May 11, 1967. On March 31, 1968, he married Mabel Burkholder, who died Dec. 25, 1991. On Jan. 9, 1993, he married Barbara L. Burkholder, who survives.
He retired as owner of John Mast Construction, was assistant pastor of Maple Lawn Church and a missionary at El Salvador orphanage, where he was called “Papi Juan” by orphans and many others.
Also surviving are daughters, Barbara Ellen (and spouse Dan) Yoder, Ireland; Ruth Ann (and spouse John) Yoder, Bluffton; Irma Jean (and spouse Paul) Miller, Newcomerstown, Ohio; Susan Kay (and spouse Delbert) Schlabach, Ripley, Ohio; Carolyn (and spouse Daniel) Bontrager, Shipshewana; and Phyllis Burkholder, Goshen; sons, Thomas Allen Mast and Steven (and spouse Marilyn) Burkholder, all of Nappanee; Gary (and spouse Lillian) Burkholder, Rochester; a brother, Joe E. (and spouse Ella) Mast, Chouteau, Okla.; two sisters, Fannie (and spouse Crist) Miller and Mary (and spouse Merle) Overholt, Sarasota, Fla.; 39 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, three sisters and a brother.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Maple Lawn Church, Nappanee, with Paul E. Yoder and Daniel Bontrager officiating. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Church Cemetery. with Gary Burkholder officiating.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church.
Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, is in charge of arrangements.
