MARION- John D. Melching, 78, of Leesburg, died at 10 p.m. April 6, 2011, in his residence surrounded by his wife and family.
He was born in Bluffton, to Orville and Martha Phipps Melching, who preceded him in death. On June 3, 1955, he married Mary E. Campbell who survives in Leesburg.
He was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. He retired from General Motors, Marion, in May 1987 where he was a supervisor in the tool and die department and owned A.F. Billings Flowers and Gifts, Wabash, for 30 years. He was a 55-year member of the Elks 195, Marion, and America Legion, North Webster. He enjoyed spending his summers at the lake with his family and friends. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing and boating. He was a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Marion.
Also surviving are two daughters, Pam S. (and spouse Stephen) Brundage, Springfield, and Elizabeth A. (and spouse Bob) Van Hoose, Paintsville, Ky.; two sons, John M. (and spouse Sally) Melching, Sweetser, and David A. (and spouse Jerri) Melching, Syracuse; two sisters, Nancy Pressler, Cary, N.C., and Susan Barton, Carmel; 10 grandchildren: Amber (and spouse Chad) Potier, Shalisha (and spouse Jeremy) Preston, Megan Melching, Haley Melching, J.R. (and spouse Shawna) Van Hoose, Tiffany (and spouse Brad) Austin, Alex Van Hoose, Austin (and spouse Kaylen) Melching, Evan Melching and Jordan Melching; seven step-grandchildren: Brandy (and spouse Jason) Barthel, Jessica (and spouse Josh) Michael, Summer Kozon, Phillip (and spouse Monica) Brundage, Patrick (and spouse Nicole) Brundage, Paul Brundage, and Hope Brundage; three great-grandchildren, Sylas Melching, Will Austin and Adrianna Michael; and two step-great-grandchildren, Taylor Brundage and Owen Brundage. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert and Carrie Melching.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Needham-Storey-Wamper Funeral Service (North Chapel), 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, with the Rev. Jack Barthel officiating. Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park, Marion.
Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
