MUNCIE – John D. “J.D.” Harrold, 72, passed away Nov. 16, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 8, 1942, in Indianapolis, to John W. and Alice M. Myerly Harrold. He was married to Jennie L. Bryan Harrold, who survives.
He graduated from Selma High School in 1960, attended Ball State University and graduated with an associate’s degree from Indiana Business School. He served his country honorably in the National Guard at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
He worked for R.R. Donnelly & Son, Warsaw, for 22 years as an assistant pressman printing the JC Penny catalogue. He was a talented and accomplished trumpet player and was a member of the 1960s band The Initials. He played for all of his proms so he never got to attend. The band also played several area clubs and made a record. He was also known for playing “Taps” on Memorial Day for several area cemeteries.
He attended Grace Baptist Church and was a member of the “Shot Rod” car club. He and his buddies loved their cars and would often work on them together. He was also a huge Elvis fan and loved NASCAR and Indy Car Racing. His favorite driver was A.J. Foyt. He also loved animals, especially his two cats, George E. and Libbey, and his boyhood collie named Shawn.
Also surviving are two children, Angela (and spouse Bill) Baer, Metamora, Ill., and John B. Harrold, Warsaw; three stepchildren: Chad Thrasher and Paul Summy, both of Warsaw; Brandon (and spouse Page) Thrasher, Fort Wayne; three grandchildren: Devin Harrold, Warsaw; Alec McCowan, Bowling Green, Ky.; and Hanna (and spouse Austin) Hodge, Lebanon, Ill.; two step-grandchildren, Kyle Baer, San Diego, Calif., and Hayley Thrasher, Warsaw; one brother, Mike (and spouse Patsy) Harrold, Muncie; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with full military by the Veterans of Delaware County. Cremation will take place.
Calling is from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel.
