MACDILL AFB, TAMPA, Fla. - The Joint Military Information Support Command, a subordinate Joint command of U.S. Special Operations Command, bid a fond farewell to Army Col. Jack N. Summe and welcomed his successor, Army Col. Dorothea M. Burke, in a ceremony at the MacDill Air Force Base's Davis Conference Center Sept. 3.

Adm. Eric T. Olson, Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command, presided over the ceremony and praised Col. Summe for the work he and the JMISC have accomplished during Col. Summe's tenure.

Under Col. Summe's leadership, the JMISC was instrumental in supporting the 4-star geographic combatant commands by planning, coordinating, integrating, and, on order, executing trans-regional psychological operations to promote U.S. goals and objectives.

"In a meeting I attended last month, I was told that the JMISC is the most effective tool this nation has with respect to an information campaign in support of the war on terrorism. The success of the JMISC is due to the great, hard work of the JMISC under the leadership of Col. Summe," Adm. Olson said.

Following the change-of-command ceremony, Col. Summe was retired from active duty after a distinguished 30-year career where he served in command and staff positions within various military police and psychological operations organizations.

"I will miss this a great deal and I will miss the Army," said Col. Summe.[[In-content Ad]]Prior to assuming command of the JMISC, Col. Burke served as the Deputy, Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan.

"I wish you all the luck in the world and God speed. I know you will do a phenomenal job. This team will follow you, all you have to do is point them in the right direction," Col. Summe told Col. Burke.

The JMISC is comprised of senior military and civilian personnel whose mission is to plan, coordinate, integrate and, on order, execute trans-regional psychological operations to promote U.S. goals and objectives in support of the global war on terrorism.

Col. Summe previously served as the Commander of the 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C., and as the Psychological Operations Division Chief on the Joint Staff during the attack on 9/11 and for two years after, planning PSYOP activities in support of the War on Terrorism efforts.

Col. Summe was a long-time resident of Warsaw and an athletic and academic standout from Warsaw Community High School. He graduated from WCHS in 1974 and from Purdue University in 1978.
