NAPPANEE - Jimmy Sumpter Sr., 70, of 356 Morningside Drive, Nappanee, died at 10 a.m. Sept. 4, 2009, in his residence.

He was born Sept. 26, 1938, in Warsaw, to Eldon and Thelma Eherenman Sumpter. On May 28, 1960, in South Gate, Calif., he married Patricia A. Miller, who died June 19, 2004.

Living most of his life in Nappanee, he was a Warsaw High School graduate and retired as assistant superintendent of Nappanee Parks & Recreation in 2007, after 21 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-60. He was a former member of the Jaycees and a member of Elkhart Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Surviving are a son, Jim Jr. (and spouse Laurie) Sumpter, Nappanee; two daughters, Missy (and spouse Jay) Fisher and Becky (and spouse Matt) Tice, all of Nappanee; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy (and spouse Bernie) Beer, Nappanee, and Pattie (and spouse Sam) Younce, Etna Green; and a brother, Jack (and spouse Carrol) Sumpter, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, with the Rev. Joseph Fox officiating. Burial will be in Bremen Cemetery with a military graveside service by members of Nappanee American Legion.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
