NORTH MANCHESTER - Jesse "Jess" Davis Jr., 87, of Liberty Mills, died at 5:11 a.m. May 15, 2010, in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

He was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Riceville, Ky., to Jesse Sr. and Priscilla Blair Davis. On March 16, 1944, he married Bernice V. Jennings, who died June 12, 2008.

He was a retired brick mason and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Kosciusko County, Claypool, and the American Legion Post 286, North Manchester. He enjoyed gardening and hunting.

Surviving are two sons, Harold Davis, Liberty Mills, and Kenneth Davis, Lynden, Wash.; three daughters: Linda (and spouse Carl) Garringer, New Haven; Retta (and spouse Jay) Melcher, Fort Wayne; and Alice (and spouse Bill) Zimmerle, Elkhart; 24 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor Terry Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, North Manchester.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
