Jesse D. Humberd, 87, of 1 Park Ave. Unit 405, Winona Lake, died March 21, 2009, in his residence.

He was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Roann, to the Rev. Russell I. and Anna M. Black Humberd. On Aug. 29, 1942, he married Laura Eastep, who died in 2007.

He served as a deck officer in the U.S. Navy on the USS Roe in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a professor and chairman of the math and science department at Grace College & Seminary of Winona Lake, retiring in 1991 after 37 years. He received two master's degrees in arts and divinity and a PhD from Ohio State University. He was a resident of Kosciusko County since 1951, and a member of Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Lenora (and spouse Dan) Kingery, Dover, Del., and Margaret (and spouse Steve) Damer, Howe; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, James Humberd, Burbank, Calif.; and a sister, Martha (and spouse Don) Allbaugh, Delphi. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Tom Miller officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
