He was born July 22, 1920, in Warsaw, to Almon and Allee Whitenberger Gerard. On March 21, 1975, in Warsaw, he married Diane Cain, who survives.
A lifetime Warsaw resident, he owned Central Shoe Store, Warsaw, for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He was a Lt. JG in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was very active in the Kosciusko County Historical Society; American Legion Post #49; Phi Kappa Psi; Merchants Association; Elk's Club; Tippecanoe Lake Country Club; and Stonehenge Country Club. He graduated from Indiana University with a master's degree in fine arts. He was a member of Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a son, James "Jim" Gerard, Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Isabelle Gerard, Indianapolis; two stepsons, David Grossman, Utica, N.Y., and Christian (and spouse Elizabeth) Grossman, Covington, Ky.; three stepdaughters, Cindy (and spouse Steve) Hobbs, Coldwater, Mich., and Stephanie Grossman and Jennifer (and spouse Jay) True, both of Bloomington; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with the Rev. Ron Horgan of Warsaw Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with a military graveside service by members of American Legion Post 49.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
