SOUTH WHITLEY - Jay D. Shoemaker, 65, of South Whitley, died at 5:35 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009, in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was admitted Dec. 29.

He was born April 5, 1943, in Kosciusko County, to Donavan and Goldie Taylor Shoemaker. On Dec. 27, 2004, he married Mary L. Sitts Snyder.

He graduated from Claypool High School and Indianapolis Barber College. He moved to South Whitley where he was a barber for 18 years. He resided in Ohio for a few years before returning to South Whitley. He was a salesman for Yetter Farm Equipment, Rupley Farm Equipment and most recently Kerlin Tractor Sales, Silver Lake. He was a South Whitley volunteer fireman and a member of Eel River Masonic Lodge 510 F&AM, Scottish Rite and Whitley County Shrine Club.

Also surviving are two sons, Kevin (and spouse Deb) Shoemaker, South Whitley, and Kip (and spouse Trisha) Shoemaker, North Manchester; three grandsons; four stepchildren: Linda (and spouse Raymond) Loe, North Webster; Donna (and spouse LeRoy) Fugate and Julie Snyder, all of South Whitley; and Don (and spouse Vicky) Snyder Jr., Silver Lake; four step-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; his mother, Goldie Shoemaker, South Whitley; and a sister, Janet (and spouse Rex) Woodruff, Bloomington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Miller Chapel, South Whitley. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Claypool.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a Masonic service by members of Eel River Masonic Lodge 510 F&AM at 8 p.m.
