Jarrett Sixth In ARCA Finale, Takes Rookie Honors
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
HAMPTON, Ga. - In what already looked like a 'been there, done that,' 26-year-old ML Motorsports driver Jason Jarrett now has the T-shirt to show for it.
After finishing sixth in Saturday's ARCA RE/MAX Series season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway, members of the Warsaw-based stock car team donned shirts proclaiming Jarrett the 2001 Rookie of the Year.
Having driven to 10 top-10 finishes, including three seconds, two thirds and a fifth, in his last 11 races, Jarrett appears to be a lock to take ARCA's top rookie honors. Highlighted by a win in the inaugural race at Kansas Speedway, Jarrett and his ML Motorsports team finished second in the season point standings.
"ML Motorsports is doing what it needs to have a good team," Jarrett said while his grandfather and two-time NASCAR champion Ned Jarrett signed autographs. "This team is full of people that are willing to put forth the effort. The biggest thing I learned from my dad is that you win with the equipment you're in and the people you're surrounded by. We had the best of both worlds this year. We got the Rookie of the Year deal and finished second in the points. They're not my awards, though. They belong to anybody that had a part in this team."
After finishing Saturday's 162-lap race around the fast 1.54-mile oval, Jarrett radioed in and thanked his crew for the best year he'd ever had. Jarrett's father, 1999 Winston Cup champion Dale Jarrett, also praised the team.
"We were hoping to get a top three today," crew chief Scott Eldridge said. "We didn't, but we made a lot of progress. We had a good race car. It might not have been the best car to take to Atlanta and Charlotte, but all in all we had a good year. We just need to keep making progress and see where we're at."
The particular No. 67 Monte Carlo Jarrett drove Saturday was the car he won with at Kansas, finished second with at both Nashville and Chicagoland, and was seventh with at Lowes Motor Speedway.
After starting from the seventh spot, Jarrett spent the majority of the day in the top 10. Despite an ill-handling car, the third-generation driver was in contention for a top-five finish thanks to his speedy pit crew.
Pitting on lap 98 of 162, Jarrett entered pit road in 10th and came out sixth. Pitting under caution on lap 135, the ML Motorsports team came in eighth and went out fifth.
Though he would have liked to win the season finale in front of a large group of family and friends, Jarrett was still pleased with the sixth-place finish.
"Especially the way we started out," Jarrett said. "Everybody was calm and did what they needed to do. We didn't have the best car, but we still came out alright. Nobody paniced, well, except for maybe the driver. But Scott did a good job of keeping me calm."
Trying to fix the ill-handling Chevy, the ML Motorsports team had trouble getting a spring rubber in the right front tire during a lap-66 pit stop. The stop took 21 seconds, a time uncharacteristic for the No. 67 crew.
While Jarrett dominated the race for Rookie of the Year, it was another third-generation driver that stole the show Saturday - 31-year-old Kerry Earnhardt.
Earnhardt, the eldest son of the late Dale Earnhardt, passed 20-year-old Stuart Kirby on lap 144 and easily drove to the checkered flag, winning by a margin of 6.313 seconds.
In all, Earnhardt's No. 2 Chevy led 75 of the 162 laps. Standing in victory lane, Earnhardt dedicated the win to the late Blaise Alexander.
Alexander, an ARCA and NASCAR Busch Series driver and friend of Earnhardt's, was fatally innjured in an October race at Lowe's Motor Speedway while trying to pass Earnhardt for the win.
Shane Hmiel finished second in Saturday's race, followed by 2001 ARCA champion Frank Kimmel, Kirby, Tim Steele, Jarrett, Ed Berrier, Damon Lusk, Robert Burroughs and Rick Thoennes in the top 10.
Kimmel won 10 races en rout to his third overall and second consecutive championship. The Jeffersonville, Ind. driver led 59 laps Saturday and qualified on the pole with a new track record.
Warsaw Wrestlers Open Season Strong
By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
In Saturday's Warsaw Invitational, a six-team Super Dual, the Tiger wrestlers won all five of their meets, amassing a 5-0 record to begin the season. The Tigers also boasted five individual champions who went undefeated on the day: Chris Elvidge (119 pounds), Anthony Boley (125), Matt Palladino (135), Adam Galvin (171), and Jacob Boots (215).
TRITON
In team competition Triton scored three victories (against Kokomo, LaVille, and Eastside) and lost twice (to Warsaw and Valley). For Triton, this was a vast improvement over last year's single victory in the event. Three individuals from Triton were undefeated champions.
Repeating from last year were Justin Scott (112) and Errik Lemler (130), along with new champ, Tate Chapman (152).
TIPPECANOE VALLEY
With the disadvantage of three gaps in the varsity roster, Tippecanoe Valley currently spots every opponent 18 points in forfeits.
The Vikings were able to manage only one team win and that was against Triton, 45-36. The lone individual champ for Valley was Kevin Day (145) who racked up four pins in earning his championship.
WARSAW
Warsaw dominated the event, outscoring every team by no less than thirty points. Warsaw's wrestlers were overpowering in a majority of their individual matches on Saturday. In fact, out of 54 matches for the Tigers, 32 were won by fall, including 25 in the first period.
To say the least, Warsaw coach Tony Boley was quite pleased with the hard work of his team. "Good conditioning really helps," said Boley. "We have had great practices, and there will be some tough competition in the wrestling room in the weeks to come." Head to head challenges will determine who is to fill a few vacancies which have opened in the line-up due to season-ending injuries for a couple of senior leaders, Adam Bott and John Milton.
Freshman Chris Elvidge took his championship at 119 pounds on the strength of two wins along with three forfeits. Anthony Boley (125) pinned every opponent he faced, spending an average of about a minute and a half on the mat for each match.
Matt Palladino (135), a junior, nailed three opponents in the first period and one fall in the second period. Adam Galvin (171) had two forfeits but stuck all of his victims in the first period. Jacob Boots (215) scored pins in all four of his victories, including one in just 20seconds.
Tanner Connealy (130) and Kyle Boley (140) each went 4-1 on the day. Connealy's wins included a fall in 22 seconds and all four of Boley's victories were by fall. Tim Balestri (160) had three victories, including two first-period pins while Tyler Miller (189) won three matches.
The Tiger team next takes its 5-0 record to Elkhart Memorial on November 27 at 7:00 p.m. to open the Northern Lakes Conference season.
