Jarrett Leaves Nashville Singing The Blues
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
GLADEVILLE, Tenn. - A place known for its country music, Jason Jarrett and his ML Motorsports team left the Nashville area this weekend with reason to sing the blues.
Coming off a fifth-place effort at Atlanta and racing at a track where 26-year-old Jarrett drove to finishes of sixth and second a year ago, the third-generation driver's No. 67 Chevy came home 37th in Friday's PFG Lester 150 ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Nashville Superspeedway.
Driving a backup car after a blown right front tire in Thursday's practice forced Jarrett hard into the Turn 2 wall, the North Carolina native still qualified sixth, though bad luck struck again in the race when the oil pump belt fell off on lap 16 of 113 around the 1.33-mile concrete oval.
The Warsaw-based pit crew, known as Purple Thunder, quickly replaced the belt in an attempt to put Jarrett back on the track, but the engine had already sustained extensive damage.
"The oil pump belt came off," said Jarrett, who fell from third to seventh in the season point standings. "Usually it's a rock or something that knocks it off. It's hard to control stuff like that. I had a good car up to that point. We picked off a couple cars and were moving up. We went through some problems last year and overcame them. A little adversity won't deter this team, it'll make them just work harder."
Shuffled back to eighth in the opening laps, Jarrett worked his way to fifth by the ninth lap and was in fourth and catching the leaders when he radioed the problem to crew chief Scott Eldridge.
"We can say all the what ifs in the world, but that's not gonna help us," Jarrett said. "The biggest thing is these guys worked hard this weekend, getting the backup car ready to qualify and then trying to get me back on the track. This team will bounce back, I know we will."
With Jarrett and crew left only to watch, two-time defending season champ Frank Kimmel put on a show, leading 74 of the 113 laps and picking up his 34th career win.
Driving his No. 46 Ford, Kimmel started from the pole and led the first 18 laps. He took the lead away from Tennessee driver Sammy Ragan on lap 36 and led 23 more circuits. After a series of pit stops late in the race put the Jeffersonville native back in the field, Kimmel went three-wide picking off cars and wrestling the lead away from Ragan on lap 104.
The race finished under caution when Mississippi driver Robert Burroughs crashed on lap 107.
Following Kimmel in the top 10 were Ragan, John Hayden, former NFL coach Jerry Glanville, Chase Montgomery, Chad Blount, Damon Lusk, Jason Rudd, Shelby Howard and Ron Cox.
Rudd, nephew of NASCAR Winston Cup driver Ricky Rudd, was making his first career ARCA start.
With his dominating performance, Kimmel, who flew out immediatley to practice for Sunday's Winston Cup race in Viriginia, moved up to third in the season standings. Blount, a 22-year-old rookie from Walkerton, Ind., remains first, followed by Lusk, Kimmel, Howard and Cox in the top five.
Next up on the ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule is a short-track event April 28 at Salem Speedway in southern Indiana.
Valley Tops Triton In Muddy Battle
By Dan Riordan, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
AKRON -ÊMother Nature hasn't been very kind to spring sports recently. Inclement weather pushed Monday afternoon's game between Valley and Triton to Saturday morning.
Even with the rescheduling, the conditions Saturday morning were less than ideal to say the least.
As the game started there were visible puddles in the outfield and the middle infield. Valley was able to fight through the conditions and pull out the 6-1 victory.
In baseball, cold weather usually equals cold bats but that was not the case for Valley.
The Vikings got things started early when Chuck Sterk dilled a double to deep right field, scoring Phillip Jackson from second. Jackson reached on a duck-snort single and a stolen base.
Valley was threatening again when pitcher Caleb Shewman's infield single put runners on the corners with two outs.
The next batter, Lance Bailey, scorched one to left field but Triton's Jay Waggoner sloshed through the elements to make a leaping grab.
Triton, however, struggled not only with their bats but also on the base paths as well.
Todd Blackford started the second inning by getting hit by a pitch. On a 3-0 count, Blackford squared around to bunt and was plunked by Shewman.
Blackford proceeded to steal second but got greedy. He was caught in a run down on an attempt to steal third base, eliminating the scoring threat for the Trojans.
Those sorts of base running errors really hurt Triton. The reason was Valley hurler Caleb Shewman. Shewman was unhittable for the first three innings. He struck out four in the first three frames.
But Shewman was unconventional in getting batters out. He found himself behind in the count for nearly every batter. He struggled with the control of his fastball early but was able to use a nasty curve and off-speed pitches to keep Triton batters guessing.
His offense also kept the pressure off him.
In the bottom half of the third, the Vikings began to threaten once more.
Leadoff hitter Kevin Paxton started the inning with a double. After a sacrifice bunt, Sterk singled.
Valley committed base running blunders of their own as Paxton got caught in a run down.
Shewman followed with a double. Sterk however got a poor jump off the bag and was held at third on the throw.
A Derek Sausaman single finally brought Sterk home.
The inning ended when Shewman was thrown out at home.
Triton put a run on the board when Adam Wanamacher walked to start the inning. He advanced to second on an error by the firstbaseman and then to third on a passed ball with two outs. Centerfielder Daniel Kuhn drove Wanamacher home with a single.
Triton's half of the inning ended when Kuhn was caught stealing second.
Valley answered right back in the bottom of the fourth.
Kevin Paxton hit an RBI single, driving home Schwenk.
The top of the fifth inning saw a strange occurrence to say the least. After Kuhn was caught stealing in the fourth, Triton substituted Brian Moriarty for Cory Ellinger in the sixth batter's position.
However, instead of Moriarty leading off the fifth, Chico Pizano, batting in the seventh spot, skipped him. Pizano grounded out.
The next batter Jay Wagoner flew out to center field.
Before catcher Kyle Bell could get his cuts, Valley's bench realized the mistake. The umpire ruled Moriarty out because Triton batted out of turn.
Essentially, Triton committed three outs with two batters.
Valley blew things open in the sixth inning, putting up a three spot and extending its lead to 6-1. The Vikings sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom half of the sixth. Two errors by Triton's Wanamacher led to all three runs being unearned.
With plenty of insurance runs added in the sixth, Shewman was allowed to go for a complete game.
Shewman began to tire and struggled allowing the first two batters on base. He settled down enough to retire the next three and get thecomplete game. In the process he fanned nine while giving up four hits and one earned run.
Valley moves to 3-1 on the season while Triton's record slips to 1-2.
