James W. “Bill” Pierce, 96, of Winona Lake, died at 9:05 a.m. April 12, 2011, in Grace Village Healthcare Center, Winona Lake. 
He was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Norborne, Mo., to Forrest and Beulah M. Gardner Pierce. On Aug. 25, 1946, in Hobart, he married Allison Watson, who died Feb. 26, 2009.
Formerly of Hobart, he lived in Winona Lake for the past few years. He was a lab supervisor for Cities Service Oil Co., East Chicago, retiring in 1972. He was a member of Michigan Ave. United Methodist Church, Hobart. He was a World War II U.S. Army, serving in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged July 23, 1945. He was a member of the 735th Tank Battalion and a recipient of the Silver Star and two Purple Heart.
He was a man of integrity and determination who dearly loved his family and Chicago Cubs. 
Surviving are two sons, John (and spouse Janice) Pierce, Decatur, Ill., and Lester (and spouse Nanette) Pierce, Warsaw; a daughter, Karen (and spouse Ronald) Breitsprecher, Fort Collins, Colo.; six grandchildren: Dawn Melvin, Gwen Cronin and Eric, Adam, Mallery and Austin Pierce; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eugene, Frank and William Ralph Pierceton; and a sister, Mary Ellen Linville. 
Services will be at noon Saturday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw, with John Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home.
