James "Jim" Wilson Lucas, 92, of 8445 E. Backwater Road, North Webster, passed away at 3:35 a.m. Nov. 24, 2010, in Kosciusko Community Hospital.
He was born Oct. 26, 1918, in Paris, Ky., to Luna Grayson and Charles Lucas. On July 8, 1950, he married Esther Louise Hite, who survives in North Webster.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1938-1946 and served honorably throughout World War II. He was deployed on numerous ships, including the USS Melville, and in various military operations in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters.
He was a resident of Kosciusko County for the past 60 years. He was employed at the Times-Union, Warsaw, for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1993. Early on he worked there as a linotype compositor and operator, and later as a phototypesetter in the camera room. He thoroughly loved his work and the friendships of his co-workers.
He was a longtime member of Harrison Center Church, Etna Green. As a young man he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and golfing. He was always well read and an avid gardener throughout his life. He was deeply loved and adored by his family and friends in the community.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years; six step-grandchildren: Edson (and spouse Jolene) Holloway, Yelm, Wash.; Cheryl (and spouse Joel) Crist, Peru, Ind.; Donna (and spouse David) Shafer, Logansport; Teresa (and spouse Mike) Tomlinson, Cortland, Ohio; Jeanene (and spouse Brian) Walls, North Webster; James Robert (and spouse Jodi) Grindle, Warsaw; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Otis "Oat" Lucas, and two stepchildren, Phyllis Grindle Holloway and Robert Grindle.
A private funeral service will be Wednesday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Pastor Denny Bollenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 1126, both of Warsaw.
No calling is planned.
