James “Jim” L. Mayer, 83, Warsaw, went home to be with the Lord at 5:55 p.m. May 18, 2014, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born July 12, 1930, in Akron, Ohio, to Harold O. and Mildred L. Finley Mayer. On June 11, 1949, he married Margaret DeLoe, who died Jan. 30, 1988. On Oct. 2, 1993, in Leesburg, he married Martha Elizabeth Dillon, who survives in Warsaw.
He was a resident of Kosciusko County for the past 66 years where he was a member of Harrison Center Church in Etna Green. He was a 1948 graduate of Warsaw High School, and then attended Grace College in Winona Lake, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1965. He also received his master’s degree from the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne. He taught school in New Paris for two years, teaching Spanish and English, and then he taught Spanish for many years at Warsaw Community High School, retiring in 1990. He was an avid fisherman, an antique car restorer, collector of Indian artifacts, a wonderful and talented jewelry maker and he raised ginseng.
Also surviving are three sons: Steve Mayer, Winona Lake; Jim (and spouse Jan) Mayer, Claypool; Rod (and spouse Shana) Mayer, Warsaw; one daughter, Barbara (and spouse Jose) Castillo, Cleveland, Ohio; and one stepdaughter, Sharon (and spouse Brad) Rice, Warsaw; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pat (and spouse Don) Sand, Warsaw. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Scott Mayer, who died in 1984; a granddaughter, Ann Margaret, who died in 1995; and his brother Bill Mayer, who died in 2004.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, with Pastor Rob Vance officiating. Burial and graveside service is in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
