James D. Johnson, 67, of 3164 E. CR 1000N, Syracuse, died at 11:05 p.m. July 1, 2009, in Miller's Merry Manor, Syracuse.

He was born Sept. 24, 1941, in Eureka Springs, Ark., to John T. and Ruby E. Beaver Johnson. On March 4, 1983, in Floyd County, Ky., he married Mary Whitt, who survives.

Moving to Syracuse from South Haven, Kan., in 2006, he was a grinder at Kreonite Manufacturing, Wichita, Kan. Serving in the U.S. Army from 1965-67, he was a private 1st class in the Vietnam War.

Also surviving are four stepdaughters: Donna J. Tolson, Campton, Ky.; Avonda Sue Raber and Bonnie Lou Endicott, both of Syracuse; and Rosemary Gilstrap, Dibble, Okla.; two sisters, Gail Ronk and Barbara Matlock, both of Wichita; 11 step-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two stepsons, a stepdaughter and four brothers.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bixler Park, Warsaw, with military honors by members of Warsaw American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126. Burial will be private.

No calling is planned.
