NAPPANEE - Jacob A. Whetstone, 78, of 26412 CR 54, died at 1:30 a.m. June 11, 2008, in his residence, after a 17-month illness.

He was born July 1, 1929, in Marshall County, to Amos and Mattie Borkholder Whetstone. On March 14, 1953, in Milford, he married Sylvia Hochstetler, who survives.

A lifetime area resident, he retired in 1994 after 43 years at Deisch Supply and DESCO Chemical. He attended Salem Mennonite Church.

Also surviving are six daughters: Linda (and spouse John) Tener, Shirley (and spouse Terry) Tucker, Marsha (and spouse Roger) Hostetter and Gloria (and spouse Ron) Yoder, all of Nappanee, and Rose (and spouse Vern) Mace and Sandy (and spouse Craig) Drudge, both of Goshen; a son, the Rev. Philip (and spouse Tammy) Whetstone, Port Huron, Mich.; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five brothers: Ervin (and spouse Edna) Whetstone, Topeka; Joe (and spouse Katie) Whetstone and David (and spouse Alma) Whetstone, both of Nappanee; Amos Jr. (and spouse Katie) Whetstone, Goshen; and John Henry (and spouse Wilma) Whetstone, Irvington, Ky.; and a sister, Anna (and spouse Paul) Graber, Guthrie, Ky. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Salem Mennonite Church with Pastor Terrill Yoder officiating, assisted by Home Ministries. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
