SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊSometimes good things come from unexpected places.

Just ask Tippecanoe Valley senior Stuart Jackson.

In Friday night's game against Whitko, Jackson found himself at the free throw line with 3.4 seconds left in regulation and the score tied at 42-all.

Jackson hit the first charity bucket, but missed the secon to give his team a 43-42 lead. Whitko snatched the rebound and called a timeout near the half-court line with 1.7 ticks left on the clock.

"Once he made the first one, we thought about having him miss the second one intentionally to run some time off the clock," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "Well, it did run a little time off the clock."

Three Valley timeouts later, Whitko inbounded the ball to senior Derrick Day, who took an off-balance shot that hit the backboard and banked just left of the rim as the buzzer signaled the end of the game.

"We thought they would go to (Jeremy) Coble or Day," said Patrick. "We took the three timeouts to see where they set up and make adjustments defensively."

The win makes Valley 6-1 overall, but more importantly 1-0 in Three Rivers Conference play. Whitko is 1-5 and 0-1 in the TRC.

In a game that saw seven ties and 11 lead changes, neither team led by more than six points. Most of the game was a back-and-forth battle between the conference rivals.

Coble scored the first points of the game, two free throws, to put Whitko up 2-0, and then the race was on.

Valley's Jeff Parker hit one free throw and then Shane Denny hit a basket and a free throw to put the Vikings up 4-2 with 5:12 left in the first frame.

The teams traded baskets through the rest of the quarter, and the Vikings took a 13-11 lead into the second stanza.

Vikings John Gibson and Cory Vanlaningham hit back-to-back baskets to give Valley it's biggest lead of the game, 17-11.

But the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game after Day, Brad Smith and Rupley all put points on the board and put Whitko up 18-17.

The teams battled throughout the reast of the quarter, and when time ran out of the first half, Whitko found itself on top 27-24.

Denny aced two free throws to open the second half, but Whitko clung to the lead throughout the third frame and too a 35-34 advantage into the final quarter of play.

However, that lead only lasted until the 7:01 mark in the fourth quarter when David Lash hit a basket to give Valley a 36-35 lead.

A free throw by Noah Shepherd knotted the score at 36-all, and a basket by Day at the 5:40 mark put the Wildcats up 38-36.

After Valley's Shane Drudge and Whitko's Dan Rupley traded baskets, Whitko held a 40-38 lead.

Until Vanlaningham got an open look from three-point land, that is. With 2:40 left in the fourth frame, Vanlaningham hit a three-pointer to put Valley in the lead 41-40. Just a few second later, he hit a free throw to make the score 42-40.

Day tied the score at 42-all with 1:32 left in the game. Then Jackson hit the game-winning free throw to give Valley the win.

"We need to get a little more experience and make better choices at the end," said Whitko coach Don Zawlocki. "Our guys played their hearts out. They played with a lot of guts."

Day le all scorers with 19 points, while Rupley chipped in nine.

"Whitko is a very good team," said Patrick. "Day is an excellent player, and Rupley did a good job as well. They have a couple players out right now, and once they get those players back, Whitko is going to pose a real challenge to teams, especially at sectional time."

Vanlaningham, who suffered a concussion earlier this week, led the Vikings with 13 points. Drudge added eight, and Denny tossed in seven.

The Vikings are off until Jan. 2 when they compete in the Rochester Tournament, while Whitko takes a break until a Jan. 3 matchup with Churubusco.
